Tino Aiello is a ceramist in Vallauris, on the Côte d'Azur. A conversation about twenty years of practice, learning through failure, and the meditative nature of working with clay.
This time, we meet Tino Aiello, a ceramic artist from the renowned pottery town of Vallauris, whom we knew from before but never had the chance to visit his atelier. We were especially captivated by the rounded shapes, curved from everywhere you look. What caught our attention from these round shapes was this sensation of familiarity — just by looking at them, they made us feel welcomed, comfortable. To us, this piece captures Tino’s essence: full of joy, warmth, and energy. And we could also see this through his team, working in this same way — focused and relaxed at the same time. What we loved the most was seeing the artisanal process, the creative experimentation, getting to know the atelier, understanding how each piece of handmade ceramics is thought out and created entirely by hand. The amount of care in learning the process, failing, and trying again — and especially, understanding and respecting the nature of clay: its process, its timing. Creation has its own rhythm. It cannot be forced.
